FAQ

After a break-in in Christchurch

My mother's home was broken into and I live hours away, can you deal with it for us?+

Yes, and this exact call is common here. I'll attend, secure the house, explain everything to her at whatever pace she needs, then ring you with what I found, what I did and what it cost. Photos and the itemised invoice come to you for the insurance.

The police have been, what do I do about the insurance now?+

Keep the crime reference number they gave you, don't repair anything before it's photographed, and get the property secured, insurers expect you to prevent further loss. My invoice itemises parts and labour and pairs with the photos I take, that's the pack your claim wants.

We found our Mudeford place broken into on changeover day, how quickly can it be secure?+

Same day. Boarding, new locks and a working door before you leave, and if the place stands empty most of the year I'd suggest anti-snap cylinders and a check-over between visits so this doesn't get found late twice.

Is it worth upgrading anything after, or is lightning done striking?+

Upgrade. A burgled house has been looked at once, and the cheap fixes, anti-snap cylinders, a proper BS 3621 deadlock on a timber door, decent keeps in solid frame, are exactly what makes the second look unrewarding. I'll tell you on the night which of those your door actually needs and which it doesn't.

Need me in Christchurch now?

Give me a ring. It’s the quickest way to get to you, usually 15 to 30 minutes, any time of day. Can’t talk? Leave your number and I’ll call you straight back. No call-out fee either way.

The first honest thing to say is that Christchurch is the safest of the three towns I cover. Police.uk logs 44 burglaries within a mile of the town centre in the year to May 2026, against 66 for Poole and 121 for Bournemouth. But a low number is no comfort at all when it's your door that's been forced, and in Christchurch the person standing at that door is more often older, more often shaken, and more often ringing me through a son or daughter who lives somewhere else. I attend the same way I would anywhere, fast, calmly, and with everything on the van to leave the house solid that night.

Securing the house, and the person

A burglary repair here is rarely just carpentry. I'll make the opening safe, replace the snapped cylinder or wrecked mechanism with something genuinely better, TS 007 three-star anti-snap as standard, and board any broken glass. Then the part that matters as much in Christchurch, I'll walk the house with whoever's there, explain what I've done in plain terms, and if family are on the phone from up country I'll happily talk them through it too. I photograph all damage before touching it and leave an itemised invoice, which with the police crime reference number is what the insurer needs. If a key safe would let a carer or neighbour keep an eye on things afterwards, I fit the police-preferred sort properly, into brick, not into whatever's nearest.

Second homes and the break-in nobody saw

Mudeford and the seafront have a particular version of this job, the holiday home where the break-in happened days or weeks ago and got found on changeover day. The police.uk months bear out watching the empty season, October and November were Christchurch's two worst in the last year. I secure these properties the same day I'm called, and for owners who are away most of the year I'd rather be the locksmith who checks the doors between visits than the one who boards them up after.
