My key won't turn in our seafront flat and I'm stood outside, is the lock dead?+
Often it's corrosion binding the cylinder rather than a dead lock. I'll get you in non-destructively wherever possible, then either free it properly or swap the cylinder there and then.
We're locked out of a listed cottage near the Priory, will you have to drill it?+
Very unlikely. Old mortice and rim locks usually open to patient, non-destructive techniques, and on a period door I treat the timber and the original fittings as part of the job.

Lockouts in Christchurch often aren't the classic keys-inside-the-door story. Here it's just as often the door itself: a multipoint mechanism that's stiffened for months in the coastal air and finally locks its owner out, or a period door in the conservation streets around the Priory whose old mortice has worn to the point of jamming. Opening those without damage is exactly the sort of work I enjoy, and nine times out of ten that's how it goes.
Coastal doors lock people out differently
Near Mudeford, Stanpit and the seafront, salt air corrodes cylinders and stiffens multipoint mechanisms faster than anywhere inland. The warning signs are a key that needs jiggling and a handle that lifts harder every month, and the end of that road is a door that's secure but won't operate. When I open one I don't stop at getting you in, I'll show you what's corroding and sort it so the same door doesn't lock you out again in six months.
On the character properties around the Priory and the Quay the job is gentler: old locks picked and eased open with respect for the door, original ironmongery kept where it can be.
