FAQ

Lock replacement in Poole

Will my insurer accept the lock you fit?+

I fit locks to the standards insurers name, BS 3621 on timber doors and TS 007 three-star cylinders on uPVC and composite. Policy wording varies, so check yours, but I'll tell you plainly on the door what standard you're getting and it's marked on the lock itself.

Can you change locks on a listed or period door in the Old Town without damaging it?+

Yes. Conservation-area doors deserve a like-for-like mortice or rim fit in the existing footprint, not a fresh set of holes. It takes longer than a cylinder swap and I price it honestly, but the door stays the door.

I've just bought a place in Poole, do I really need the locks changed?+

I'd do it on day one, and not just because it's my trade. Previous owners, their trades, cleaners and letting agents can all still hold keys. One visit puts every door on fresh locks, and I can key them alike so one key runs the house.

How do I know if my cylinder is the snappable kind?+

Look at it side on. If the cylinder sticks out past the handle plate, or has no Kitemark stars stamped on the face, treat it as vulnerable. Send me a photo if you're not sure and I'll tell you straight before you spend anything.

Need me in Poole now?

Give me a ring. It’s the quickest way to get to you, usually 15 to 30 minutes, any time of day. Can’t talk? Leave your number and I’ll call you straight back. No call-out fee either way.

Changing a lock in Poole is three different jobs depending on where the door is. In the Old Town conservation area it's a heavy timber door that wants a proper British Standard mortice or rim lock fitted with care, because insurers name BS 3621 for final exit doors and a botched fit ruins a period door. On the estates at Canford Heath, Creekmoor and Oakdale it's a euro cylinder in a uPVC door, and the only cylinder worth fitting there is an anti-snap one. And out at Canford Cliffs, Branksome Park and Sandbanks it's composite and aluminium doors on high-value homes where the hardware has to match the door. I'm based on Haven Road, I carry stock for all three, and lock changes have been my most booked job this summer.

Snapping is the problem on Poole's uPVC doors

Most uPVC and composite doors around Poole still have a plain euro cylinder in them, and snapping that cylinder is the most common way these doors get attacked nationally. The fix is not complicated, a TS 007 three-star Kitemarked cylinder or a Sold Secure Diamond one, built with sacrificial sections so the lock breaks where it's designed to and stays locked. It's a single visit, it costs a fraction of what a burglary costs, and if I'm already at your door for any other job it's a quick add-on. If your cylinder pokes out past the handle face, that's the tell it's worth replacing.

When Poole people change their locks

The reasons I actually get called, most to least common:

  • Keys lost or stolen and the locks made safe the same day
  • Moving into a new home anywhere from Hamworthy to Sandbanks, you never know who holds the old keys
  • Insurance renewals asking for BS 3621 or equivalent on the exit doors
  • Upgrading a plain cylinder to anti-snap after a neighbour's been done
  • Tired locks on period doors in the Old Town that have simply worn out
