FAQ

uPVC door repairs in Poole

My handle has gone floppy on a Canford Heath estate door, is the door finished?+

No, that's the classic failed gearbox and it's the most common uPVC job I do in Poole. I carry the usual gearboxes and it's nearly always fixed the same visit.

My door only locks if I slam it and heave the handle, what's going on?+

The door has dropped so the locking points miss the keeps. That's an adjustment and realign, and doing it now is what saves the gearbox later.

Are the high-security doors on the newer Poole developments repairable when they fail?+

Yes, but they're the jobs where experience counts. The mechanisms are more complex than the older estate doors and I've dealt with the ways they go wrong.

Can you make my uPVC door harder to break into?+

Fitting a three-star anti-snap cylinder is the biggest single improvement a uPVC door can get, and it slots naturally into the same visit as any repair.

A huge share of Poole's front and back doors are uPVC on multipoint mechanisms, nearly everything on the 70s and 80s estates at Canford Heath, Creekmoor and Oakdale, plus most of the housing that's gone up since. When those doors go wrong it's nearly always one of three faults: a gearbox that's given up so the handle flops, a door that's dropped so the hooks fight the keeps, or a cylinder that's sticking or vulnerable to snapping. All three are repairs, not replacement doors.

The estate door problem, and the newer one

On the older estate doors the pattern is predictable: years of lifting the handle hard on a door that dropped long ago finally kills the gearbox. I carry the common gearboxes and cylinders on the van, so most of those are fixed in one visit, and while I'm there I'll realign the door so the new parts aren't fighting the frame from day one.

The newer story in Poole is the high-security uPVC doors on the developments built over the last decade, especially the higher-value ones. When those fail they're less forgiving, the mechanisms are more complex and opening one shut without damage takes experience. I see more of them every year and I've learned their habits.

Worth doing while the door's open

If the cylinder in your door is the one it left the factory with, swapping it for a three-star anti-snap unit while the door is already apart costs very little and closes off the snap attack, which remains how most uPVC doors around here get defeated. You'll know the price before work begins, the visit itself costs nothing, and in the rare case a door truly is beyond help I'll say so instead of selling you parts.
